A Strong Start to the Year: Highlights from the New Year's Cup & Scarborough Pan AM Winter Classic

The start of the year marked an exciting return to competitive swimming for many athletes, with two major meets showcasing impressive performances and new milestones. The New Year's Cup and the Scarborough Pan AM Winter Classic were both filled with standout moments that demonstrated the hard work athletes had put in over the holidays, even after a short return to the pool.

New Year's Cup: New Format, New Challenges

This year’s New Year’s Cup introduced a new format, marking a shift from the previous A/B meet structure. The three-day competition at Etobicoke Olympium was a first for many, especially the 10&U athletes, who had never raced in such a long format before. For 12&U athletes, it was still a rarity, but an important opportunity to experience the challenge.

After just 1.5 weeks back in the water following the holidays, athletes in groups such as SD, AGD, RSA Comp, JD1, JD2, and PD2 faced the task of getting back into the swing of racing. The meet was designed with goals in mind: for senior athletes to gauge their readiness after the break, and for junior athletes to tap into the growth and rest that often happen during time off. Some athletes returned feeling fresh and race-ready, while others used the opportunity to focus on gaining confidence and refining their race skills.

The meet saw several athletes take on significant challenges, with many competing in their first-ever 400 IMs or 800 Frees. It was also the first time most of the 10&U group participated in a 3-day meet, giving them valuable experience for future competitions.

Performance Highlights:

  • Medal Count:

    • Gold: 4, Silver: 9, Bronze: 15.
    • Medal winners included Cole B, Liam B, Abigail C, Miran D, Chloe F, Harry F, Tommy F, Daphne L, Olivia S, Claire S, Evelyn W, and Tim X.
  • NEW Qualifiers:

    • WOSA: Harper C, Gabi S, Tim X, Tiger Q.
    • OAGs: Charlie D, Liam B.
  • Club Records: Olivia Snyder broke the 11/12 Girls SCM 100 Back record with a time of 1:08.15.

The New Year’s Cup was a valuable learning experience for all athletes, and the performances were a great way to begin the competitive season. A big thank you to ESWIM for hosting this challenging and rewarding meet.

Scarborough Pan AM Winter Classic: A Tune-Up for Championship Season

A few weeks later, athletes from several squads took part in the Scarborough Pan AM Winter Classic, a 2.5-day long course meter (LCM) meet at the Toronto Pan AM Sports Complex. For many athletes, this meet came in the midst of a tough training block, but it proved to be a great opportunity to fine-tune racing skills and intensity.

The primary goal of this meet was to get a sense of racing form, particularly with the LCM events that are different from the shorter course athletes typically race. Athletes competed in several LCM races with minimal rest, pushing their limits and preparing for upcoming championships. One key takeaway was that nearly 70% of athletes achieved personal bests (PBs) in LCM events, a remarkable achievement considering the timing in the season.

Several athletes raced multiple events back-to-back, including performing the 400m Free or IM followed by the 200m Back or Free with little rest. As the meet progressed, many athletes found their groove in LCM racing—exactly what the coaching staff had hoped for.

Performance Highlights:

  • Medal Count:

    • Gold: 27, Silver: 9, Bronze: 21.
    • Medalists included Sophie R, Chris R, Zade M, Rhys B, Aris C, Kentaro D, Le Anne D, Olivia G, Sebastian H, Nathan L, Patrick L, Beckett S, Alex S, Mia T, Nikkolai T, Nic W, Ethan W, and Sunny X.
  • NEW Qualifiers:

    • Rhys B qualified in the 14 yr old boys 50 Free OAG.
  • Club Records:

    • Chris R set a new record in the 11/12 Boys 200 Fly LCM with a time of 2:30.81.
    • Beckett S set a record in the 13/14 Boys 50 Breast LCM with a time of 32.53.
    • Nic W set a record in the 13/14 Boys 200 Breast LCM with a time of 2:38.74.

The Scarborough Pan AM Winter Classic was a resounding success, giving athletes a perfect test for where they stood in their preparation for championships. The performances not only highlighted individual growth but also showcased the power of perseverance and dedication through a tough training period.

In Summary

Both the New Year's Cup and the Scarborough Pan AM Winter Classic provided athletes with unique opportunities to challenge themselves, set new records, and secure important qualifications. With strong showings from both junior and senior athletes, it’s clear that this year will be filled with promise as the swimmers continue to build on these performances heading into the rest of the competitive season.

Special thanks to ESWIM and Scarborough for hosting such well-organized meets, and congratulations to all the athletes on their accomplishments. Here's to many more successful races ahead!
